Desert Living
May/June 2006

When it comes to architecture and interior design, it doesn't get much cooler than 1930s and ‘40s Hollywood. Dream Palaces of Hollywood's Golden Age is a brilliant showcase of Streamline Moderne, Mediterranean, and Spanish Colonial style homes (the Cecil B. DeMille residence, the Edward and Estelle Doheny residence, the Charles Laughton residence, etc.) and commercial landmarks (Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Pig ‘N' Whistle, etc.) in and around Hollywood. David Wallace walks us through some recent restoration work, too, as the new owners of some of Hollywood's best known architectural gems struggle to balance preservation with livability. Best of all, Dream Palaces is loaded with glorious photos and behind-the-scenes stories about the celebrities who worked, lived, and played in these palaces.
