Jens Risom's Scandinavian Style

Winter 2003

In the 1950s and 1960s, Jens Risom Design, along with Herman Miller and Knoll, was one of the big three manufacturers of modern furniture in the U.S. Founded in 1946 by Danish-born designer Jens Risom, the company's furniture combined the Danish tradition of superior craftsmanship with American-style mass production techniques. In 1959, Interiors editor John Anderson described Risom as unique among the handful of modern furniture designers and manufacturers who helped revolutionize American taste. “Not one of the experimenters with new materials, like Breuer or Eames,” he wrote, “nor a spectacular innovator in forms, like Saarinen, nor an ever-new bundle of versatility, like Wormley, Risom represents, and was a prime mover in inaugurating, the Scandinavian aspect of the modern movement — an influence now at its peak and showing no signs of decline.”
